Every adult human being is an investment expert: You do it every day when you ask yourself how you can devote time and effort to your best advantage. Former analyst and columnist Jake van der Kamp argues that you are your own best investment adviser in his recently published book, The Rise and Fall of the Hang Seng Index. In it, he cautions that you abdicate your intelligence when you turn investment decisions over to a stranger who claims special expertise. A veteran of the Hong Kong financial scene, van der Kamp will illustrate what he means with stories from his time covering the markets. Moderated by FCC correspondent member governor Jennifer Hughes.
Jake van der Kamp came to Hong Kong in 1979 as a business reporter for the South China Morning Post, made a 20-year career shift to investment banking for, among others, Sun Hung Kai Securities and Morgan Stanley Asia, and returned to the SCMP as a daily financial columnist. He retired two years ago to pursue a hobby of rewriting fairy tales for the modern context, several of which he has launched at the FCC. The Rise and Fall of the Hang Seng Index is his second book on investing. He served for five years as treasurer on the Board of Governors of the FCC.
