Flahive is the author of Great Leaps: Finding home in a changing China. In the book, and in this talk, he explains how he discovered China as a backpacker in his early twenties back in the 1990s, how he travelled through remote parts of the country, and how after his initial experiences he thought he would never come back again. Instead he founded a cafe/restaurant in Dali with friends he met there, then expanded to another branch in Kunming, and has stayed in Yunnan province ever since. He explains what it has been like to run a hospitality business in southwest China, how he has provided opportunities for village people in the city, and how his life has taken unexpected turns.
