Blacksmith Books is an English-language publishing house based in Hong Kong and distributed throughout all the bits of the world that we can reach. Our focus is non-fiction with a local angle, though we also publish some fiction titles each year. You’ll find our books on sale through retailers in Asia, the United States, Canada, the UK and Australia.
I’m the publisher, and I’ve been running Blacksmith Books since 2003. It started off when three writer/artist friends asked me to help them publish the books they had in mind. None of us had any experience in book publishing then. But to our pleasant surprise, all three books took off and sold well, and the happy beginning encouraged us to carry on with it. We have since published more than 200 books by a wide range of authors, most of them going into multiple print runs.
In the early days, our books were available only in Hong Kong — in bookstores like Bookazine, Hong Kong Book Centre and Commercial Press, which continue to support us — then in Singapore, Shanghai and a few other cities in Asia. As time went on, we were able to sign up with distributors in most parts of the world where English books are sold. This has put our publications on the shelves of retailers like Foyles, Waterstones, Chapters/Indigo and Barnes & Noble. They’re available through all the well-known online booksellers too. I am always slightly amazed that our books about Hong Kong sell in such distant places as London and Los Angeles, but I’m very glad that they do.
Blacksmith titles have been featured and reviewed by the Daily Telegraph, BBC, Huffington Post, The Guardian, South China Morning Post, Wall Street Journal, RTHK, Time Out, China Daily, TVB, Straits Times, Christian Science Monitor, Bangkok Post and other media worldwide.
There’s lots of information on this website about our books and authors, including plenty of downloadable samples of books — please take a look! And thanks for reading.
